Der Paint Shop Berlin freut sich, mit SHELTER//SHIELD eine gemeinsame Ausstellung der Künstlerinnen Jane Garbert und Sophia Muriel zu präsentieren. In einem Spannungsfeld zwischen Schutz und Angriff, Rückzug und Sichtbarkeit verhandelt die Ausstellung das fragile Verhältnis von Verletzlichkeit und Widerstand – aus einer dezidiert weiblichen Perspektive. Garbert und Muriel verbindet ein sensibles Gespür für die Bedeutung scheinbar nebensächlicher Dinge: Alltagsmaterialien, gebrauchte Objekte, provisorische Strukturen oder textile Spuren werden zu Trägern poetischer wie politischer Bedeutungen. In ihren skulpturalen, installativen und bildnerischen Arbeiten greifen beide Künstlerinnen auf eine Sprache zurück, die das Vergängliche ernst nimmt – ohne es zu idealisieren. Schutz wird hier nicht als Rückzug verstanden, sondern als aktive Geste der Behauptung und der Sichtbarkeit. Im Zentrum steht eine Ästhetik der Ambivalenz, die sich in der Wahl der Materialien ebenso zeigt wie in der offenen, oft durchlässigen Formensprache. Weiches und Hartes, Transparentes und Opakes, Körperliches und Abwesendes begegnen einander auf Augenhöhe. Es entstehen Räume, in denen Verletzlichkeit nicht versteckt, sondern gezeigt wird – als widerständige Qualität. Die Ausstellung thematisiert Erfahrungen, die häufig übersehen oder überlagert werden – Intimität, Fürsorge, Scham, Erinnerung – und stellt Fragen nach Selbstbehauptung, Identität und kollektiver Wahrnehmung. Dabei schaffen Garbert und Muriel keine abgeschlossenen Erzählungen, sondern öffnen Möglichkeitsräume, in denen sich die Betrachter:innen selbst verorten können. Der Paint Shop, eine junge Galerie im Herzen von Berlin-Kreuzberg, bietet mit seiner markanten, schaufensterartigen Architektur ein besonderes Setting für diese Auseinandersetzung mit Sichtbarkeit, Grenze und Durchlässigkeit. Positioned between protection and confrontation, retreat and visibility, the exhibition explores the fragile relationship between vulnerability and resistance – from a distinctly female perspective. Garbert and Muriel share a keen sensitivity for the significance of seemingly incidental elements: everyday materials, used objects, makeshift structures, or traces of textiles become carriers of poetic as well as political meaning. In their sculptural, installative, and pictorial works, both artists employ a visual language that takes transience seriously – without idealizing it. Here, protection is not understood as withdrawal, but as an active gesture of assertion and visibility. At the heart of the exhibition lies an aesthetic of ambivalence, reflected in both the choice of materials and the open, often permeable formal language. Soft and hard, transparent and opaque, bodily and absent elements meet on equal footing. The resulting spaces do not conceal vulnerability, but rather make it visible – as a resistant quality. The exhibition addresses experiences that are often overlooked or marginalized – intimacy, care, shame, memory – and raises questions of self-assertion, identity, and collective perception. Garbert and Muriel do not create closed narratives; instead, they open up spaces of possibility where viewers are invited to locate themselves. Located in the heart of Berlin-Kreuzberg, the Paint Shop is a young gallery with a distinctive, window-front architecture that provides a unique setting for this engagement with visibility, boundaries, and permeability. SHELTER//SHIELD, as a collaborative project between two artistic positions, integrates seamlessly into the Paint Shop’s program, which explores current questions of contemporary art at the intersection of space, material, and society.
